Edmonson type ticket

...The use of automatic ticket gates that use passenger tickets was delayed, with the first commuter pass-only type being used by Kintetsu Railway in March 1966. However, the commuter passes at that time were punch-hole type, and full-scale use did not begin until 1971, when a study group of the Japan Railway Cybernetics Council, consisting of the Ministry of Transport, JNR, public subways, private railways, and manufacturers, decided on the standard for magnetic film-based passenger tickets (short-distance Edmondson-type passenger tickets and commuter passes) and related machines. After a trial run at Kashiwa Station in 1971, JNR put the system into practical use when the Musashino Line opened in 1973. The development of automatic ticket gate systems overseas began early in Europe, and since its introduction in the London Underground in the UK in 1963, it has been widely used in the Paris Metro in France and other places.
