1817‐80 American inventor and mechanical engineer. Born in New York, he was the son of a mill owner who was also an engineer. After graduating from middle school, he entered a New York City competition for a propeller-driven canal boat, and with his father's help, built a boat equipped with a steam engine and a propeller. Although he did not win the prize, this marked his start as a mechanical engineer. While building the boat, he created the first direct-acting boiler feed pump, which he patented in 1840. With his father's help, he established a pump factory, which he managed, and between 1845 and 1855, he invented many things, including the water meter, a reciprocating steam pump known as the Worthington pump, and machine tools.
