…The term "ticket" was first used in the November 1883 revision of the Shinbashi-Yokohama Train Timetable and Pay Table, and the term "passenger ticket" was first used in the January 1886 regulations for issuing commuter passes, and is still used to this day. The first printed passenger ticket as we know it today was invented in 1837 by Thomas Edmondson (1792-1851), a station attendant at Milton, a small station on the Carlisle-Newcastle railway in England (opened in 1835).
