…German painter born in Bohemia. His father, Ismael M. (1688-1764), was a Jewish painter from Copenhagen. His strict education continued during his stay in Rome from 1741 to 1744, during which he copied paintings at the Vatican Museum. After returning to Japan, he became a court painter in Dresden in 1746, but he had a falling out with his father and converted to Catholicism. In 1752, he finally went to Rome, where he became friends with Winckelmann and was exposed to his classical art theories. He was invited by the future King of Spain, Carlos III, whom he had met in Naples, to serve as Spanish court painter from 1761 to 1776, competing with Tiepolo and others to paint frescoes for the royal palace and villas, and painting many portraits, exerting an enormous influence on the Spanish art world of the time, including the young Goya. … *Some of the terminology that mentions "Mengs, I." is listed below.
