Phthalic acid - Phthalan

Japanese: フタル酸 - フタルサン
Phthalic acid - Phthalan

1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid. C 8 H 6 O 4 (166.13). Found in Gibberella fujikuroi , the rice blight fungus. Industrially, it is produced in large quantities as phthalic anhydride from naphthalene or o -xylene by air oxidation using divanadium pentoxide as a catalyst. Needle crystals. Melting point 191 °C (in a sealed tube). Density 1.593 g cm -3 . p K 1 2.95, p K 2 5.41. When heated in air, it is dehydrated and sublimes to become phthalic anhydride. Easily soluble in ethanol and hot water, slightly soluble in water and ether. Esters of phthalic acid and higher alcohols are used in large quantities as plasticizers, and diethyl esters as solvents. It is also used as a condensation component of polyester resins, especially alkyd resins. The potassium salt of phthalic acid rearranges to become terephthalic acid when heated. Phthalic acid is used as a raw material for blue phthalocyanine pigments. It also has various other uses as an intermediate for dyes, pharmaceuticals, etc. It is also used as an analytical reagent for the separation and quantification of zirconium. LD 50 7.9 g/kg (rat, oral). [CAS 88-99-3]
