...In the early period, Anrakuan Sakuden's "Sesui Sho" was well known as the origin of rakugo books, and around the Genroku period (1688-1704), great storytellers such as Tsuyu no Gorobei's street tales in Kyoto, Yonezawa Hikohachi's impersonations of the manners of his manners in Osaka, and Shikano Buzaemon's zashiki shikata tanashi in Edo appeared and performed witty rakugo books, and the stories they performed remained as rakugo books. In the later period, the best stories from the "Storytelling Association" became "Edo Kobanashi Books," and eventually professional rakugo artists and writers began to create rakugo books. Rakugo books are also a good source for learning about the language and customs of the Edo period. ...

…前期では安楽庵策伝の《醒睡笑》が噺本の鼻祖としてよく知られ，元禄(1688‐1704)のころには京都の露の五郎兵衛の辻咄，大坂の米沢彦八の仕方物真似，江戸における鹿野武左衛門（しかのぶざえもん）の座敷仕方咄など話芸の名手があらわれて軽妙な咄を口演したが，彼らの演じた話材は噺本として残った。後期では〈咄の会〉の佳作が〈江戸小咄本〉となり，やがて職業噺家や文人によって噺本が作られるようになった。噺本は江戸時代の言語や風俗を知るための好資料でもある。…
