A compound in which the entire molecule is surrounded by chemical bonds such as C-C bonds like a birdcage. Natural examples include adamantane C ₁₀ H ₁₆ , which is extracted from petroleum (Figure). The smallest artificially synthesized cage-shaped compound is prismane C ₆ H ₆ , a valence isomer of benzene (a colorless, transparent liquid. It was synthesized in 1973 and was named after its prism-like shape). Prismane contains a three-membered ring, which causes a large amount of distortion, and it decomposes explosively when heated.
