American track

...The nickname of the National Railway Passenger Corporation, a semi-public, private railroad company that provides intercity rail passenger service throughout the United States (except Alaska and Hawaii). Amtrak is an abbreviation for American track. Founded in October 1970 under the Railroad Passenger Service Corporation Act, it acquired the operating rights for intercity passenger service, which was a loss-making division of private railroads, and was launched on May 1, 1971. It is operated with government subsidies.
