A steel-producing city located in the southwest of Luxembourg, near the French border. Population 27,244 (2002). The second largest city in the country, facing the Alzette River, a tributary of the Sûre River. With the development of the Minette mines, which connect to the Lorraine region of France, the steel industry developed in 1870 and became the center of Luxembourg's steel industry, but production has been declining since the 1980s. In addition to related industries, chemical fertilizer and cement industries are also well developed.
