Adam Schaff
1913‐
Polish philosopher. After graduating from Lvov University, he studied in France. He defected to the Soviet Union during World War II. After the war, he returned to Poland and became a professor at the University of Lodz, then at the University of Warsaw, and from 1957 he also served as director of the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (he resigned in 1968). He worked to innovate Marxist philosophy, addressing issues such as existence and language, and attracting attention in the West. Many of his works, including "Introduction to Semantics" and "Marxism and the Individual," have been introduced in Japan. [Takeuchi Yoshitomo]

Philip Schaff

1819‐93
Swiss-born American theologian. After studying at various universities in Germany, he moved to the United States and became a professor at the German Reformed Theological Seminary in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania (1844) and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York (1870). His contributions were to introduce the American church to Europe, and to leave behind a wealth of material in the fields of church history, doctrinal history, and theology, so that American Christianity would recognize itself as part of the history of the entire Christian church and global Christianity.

シャフ【Philip Schaff】

スイス生れのアメリカの神学者。ドイツの諸大学で学んだのちアメリカに移り,ペンシルベニア州マーサーズバーグにあったドイツ改革派神学大学教授(1844),のちにニューヨークのユニオン神学大学教授になった(1870)。彼の貢献はヨーロッパにアメリカの教会を紹介するとともに,アメリカのキリスト教が全キリスト教会史と世界的キリスト教の一部であることを自覚すべく,教会史,教理史,神学の分野で多数の資料を残したことである。
