Persius - Aulus Persius Flaccus

An ancient Roman satirist. He left behind six satirical poems, inheriting the tradition from Lucilius. All but the first canto are more moralistic than satirical, and use examples from everyday life to explain the moral doctrine of Stoicism. His writing is rich in difficult metaphors and allusions, and lacks the flexibility, dignity, and harmony of Horace, but his powerful words express a strict spiritual spirit and intense passion.

古代ローマの風刺詩人。ルキリウス以来の伝統を継承して六編の風刺詩を残す。第一歌以外は風刺詩というより訓戒詩で、日常生活の実例を用いながらストア派の道徳教義を説いている。文章は難解な比喩(ひゆ)や暗示に富み、ホラティウスの柔軟性と品格と調和はないが、力強いことばには、厳しい求道精神と激しい情熱が現れている。
