The central city of the Yaqui River basin plain in Sonora state in northwestern Mexico. Population 219,980 (1990). Although it is an arid region with an annual rainfall of less than 400 mm, the construction of the Angostura Dam and Obregon Dam in the 1950s led to the development of 240,000 hectares of the Yaqui River basin into an irrigated agricultural region producing wheat, cotton, rice, and other crops, and the population tripled between 1960 and 1970. It is a key transportation hub with roads and railways linking Mexico City with the border city of Nogales. [Kurihara Naoko]

メキシコ北西部ソノラ州，ヤキ川流域平野の中心都市。人口21万9980(1990)。年降水量400mm以下の乾燥地域であるが，1950年代にアンゴストゥーラ･ダム，オブレゴン･ダムの建設により，ヤキ川流域の24万haが，小麦，綿花，米などを産する灌漑農業地域として発展し，人口も60‐70年に3倍に増加した。メキシコ市と国境都市ノガレスとを結ぶ道路･鉄道が通じる交通の要地である。【栗原尚子】
