1828‐97 Spanish politician and historian. A moderate conservative, he was a central figure in Spanish politics from 1854 onwards. He served as a cabinet minister and was also appointed protector of King Alfonso XII. After the Restoration of the Monarchy (1874), he became Prime Minister and enacted the 1876 Constitution, which aimed to transplant a British-style two-party system, but he was unable to understand the flourishing labour movement at the time, and was assassinated by an anarchist in 1897. He was an expert in the history of the Spanish Habsburg dynasty. [Suzuki Shoichi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
