Montserrat (island) (English spelling)
A volcanic island in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. An autonomous British colony. Area 102 km2. Population 10,581 (1994). Capital city is Plymouth (population 1,500). It was "discovered" by Columbus in 1493, settled by a group of English and Irish people in 1632, and was established as a British territory in 1783. Blessed with forests, rivers, and ports, its main product is cotton. [Hashimoto Yoshio]
