...A city located on the coast of Hiuchi Nada in the eastern part of Ehime Prefecture. In 1941, the two towns of Saijo and Himi and the three villages of Iioka, Kanbe, and Tachibana were merged to form a city. The population is 57,110 (1995). It developed as a castle town under the domains of the Hitotsuyanagi clan from 1636 (Kan'ei 13) and the Matsudaira clan from 1670 (Kanbun 10), each with 30,000 koku of land. The prefectural Saijo High School stands on the site of the former jin'ya. In the south, there are a series of high mountains, including the highest peak in western Japan, Mt.
