…These Italian madrigals were introduced to England in large numbers during the mid-Elizabethan period, especially after the 1580s, and as a result of their influence, a unique English madrigal style was established. Its major composers include W. Byrd, Thomas Morley (c. 1557-1602), Thomas Weelkes (c. 1575-1623), John Wilbye (1574-1638), John Ward (1571-1638), Francis Pilkington (c. 1570-1638), and Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656). The madrigal style represented by their works is a broad one that incorporates elements not only of the madrigal on which it was based, but also of lighter Italian secular songs such as the canzonetta and baretto, and of the French chanson. …
