…The size of each inland village was large, equivalent to several villages in northern Italy, but the settlements were concentrated on a hilltop, where churches, town halls, squares, shops, and stately homes were built in clusters. The large landowning aristocrats usually lived in Palermo or in the larger cities of the peninsula, and the land was managed by large tenants (gabellotti), who either worked it directly using day laborers or divided the land and rented it out to peasants. By the time of the unification of the country, control of the villages had shifted from the aristocracy to the large tenants, the rural bourgeoisie. …
