...In other words, unlike jet planes, rocket planes do not use air, but create a jet of fuel and other loads only, and move forward by the reaction of that jet. As early as 1928, Germany's Friz von Opel (1899-1971) and others made the first flight of a rocket plane, and in 1944 the first practical rocket plane, the German Messerschmitt Me163, appeared. However, because rocket planes have a short flight time, only a few were used as research aircraft after that. The American Bell XS1, which made the world's first supersonic flight in 1947, was also a rocket plane.
