Györ (English spelling)

The capital of Győr-Moson-Sopron County in northwestern Hungary. The largest city on the Kiš-Orfeld (Little Plain). Population 129,412 (2001). A key transport hub for land and water where four rivers, including the Danube and the Rava, intersect. Hungary's third largest industrial city, it saw remarkable development in the machinery and metal industries (vehicles and bridges) after World War II. Other industries include metallurgy, textiles, woodworking, and food. Within the city are the remains of a Roman fortress, a cathedral, and a memorial museum for geographer János Xantus.

ハンガリー北西部、ジェール・モション・ショプロン県の県都。小平原（キシュ・オルフェルド）最大の都市。人口12万9412（2001）。ドナウ、ラバなど四つの川が交わる水陸の交通の要衝。ハンガリー第3位の工業都市で、第二次世界大戦後、機械・金属工業（車両、橋梁(きょうりょう)）が著しく発展した。ほかに冶金(やきん)、繊維、木工、食品工業などがある。市内には、ローマ時代の城塞(じょうさい)跡、大聖堂、地理学者クサンタスJános Xantusの記念博物館などがある。
