The capital of Győr-Moson-Sopron County in northwestern Hungary. The largest city on the Kiš-Orfeld (Little Plain). Population 129,412 (2001). A key transport hub for land and water where four rivers, including the Danube and the Rava, intersect. Hungary's third largest industrial city, it saw remarkable development in the machinery and metal industries (vehicles and bridges) after World War II. Other industries include metallurgy, textiles, woodworking, and food. Within the city are the remains of a Roman fortress, a cathedral, and a memorial museum for geographer János Xantus.
