An optical disc system jointly developed by Philips (Netherlands) and Sony. Its official name is "Compact Disc." The 12cm diameter CD-DA (normal CD for audio only), 8cm CD Single, and 12cm CD Graphics (digital still images + digital audio) are part of the AV (audio/visual) family, while the CD-ROM is part of the information family. These are playback systems, but there are recordable CDs such as CD-R (for one-time recording) and CD-RW (for repeated recording). Music CDs remain the king of music media, even with the emergence of next-generation music media such as SACD (Super Audio CD) and DVD-Audio. The reason for their survival is that they have no copy protection function, can be copied to a computer, and can be imported into a portable music player.
