A type of basic dye, its molecular structure consists of three aromatic amines (including heterocyclic rings) arranged in a point-symmetrical fashion around methane. As it is a basic dye, one of the amino groups in the molecule is generally cationic (positively charged), but there are also anionic acid dyes that have sulfonic acid groups. Historically, the mauve dye, first discovered by WH Perkin in 1856, is thought to be closely related to this dye, making it very old. While its colors were vivid and deep, its color fastness was poor, but it has been discovered that some basic dyes can dye acrylic fibers beautifully and also have high light resistance.
