A village in Minamitsugaru District, central Aomori Prefecture. Population 6,545 (1995). It is located in the southeastern part of the Tsugaru Plain, and is made up of alluvial land including the Togawa River, a tributary of the Iwaki River, and the Namioka River. The soil is fertile, and being blocked by the Ou Mountains, the village is less affected by the summer easterly winds (yamase), so rice paddies make up nearly 70% of the village area. Cultivation of apples and watermelons, poultry farming, and pig farming are also thriving, and there are poultry farms outside the village. At Tokiwa Hachiman Shrine, a naked pilgrimage with a rope offering is held every year on January 1st. [Sato Yuji] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
