Ethnocentrism

Ethnocentrism. A word derived from the Greek words ethnos, meaning "race" or "ethnic group," and kentron, meaning "center." It can also refer to a mental tendency to be strongly aware of the discrimination between one's in-group and an out-group at various social levels, not limited to ethnic groups, and to have a positive, submissive attitude toward the in-group and a negative, hostile attitude toward the out-group. This tendency is inherent in all ethnic groups and groups, but when it becomes extreme, it can become extreme xenophobia, as seen in the Nazi persecution of the Jews.

自民族中心主義。ギリシア語で「人種」または「民族」を意味する ethnosと，「中心点」を意味する kentronとが結合してできたことば。また民族にかぎらず，さまざまな社会的レベルで自己の属する内集団と，自己の属さない外集団との差別を強く意識し，内集団には肯定的服従的態度を，外集団には否定的敵対的態度をとる精神的傾向をさしてもいう。いかなる民族，いかなる集団にもこの傾向が内在しているが，これが極端になるとナチスのユダヤ人迫害にみられるような極端な排外主義になる場合がある。
