A former town in Shimohei District, facing the Pacific Ocean in eastern Iwate Prefecture. It produces a lot of timber, and fishing is thriving, including the harvesting and aquaculture of abalone, sea urchins, and wakame seaweed. The Taro Mine, which produced copper, iron sulfide, zinc, and other products, closed in 1971. The town was destroyed by the 1933 Sanriku earthquake tsunami, but a large breakwater 1,350m long and 10m high was completed in 1958. It belongs to Rikuchu Kaigan National Park (now Sanriku Fukko National Park) and has many scenic spots, including Masaki. The Sanriku Railway Kita-Rias Line runs through the town. In June 2005, it was incorporated into Niisato Village, Shimohei District, and Miyako City. Area: 101.05 km2 . Population: 4,935 (2003). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
