A saw used primarily to cut metal materials. There is the hand hacksaw as a manual tool and the hacksaw as a powered machine tool. The latter is often simply called a saw or sawing machine, and can be broadly divided into hacksaws, which cut by the linear reciprocating motion of the hacksaw blade, bandsaws, which cut by the rotating and linear motion of a circular bandsaw blade, and circular saws, which cut by the rotating motion of a circular saw blade, based on the cutting motion of the saw blade. In principle, all of these are the same as woodworking saws for wood, but the difference between hacksaws and woodworking saws is that cutting is done by the push stroke.

主として金属材料を切断するのに用いられるのこぎり。手動工具としてのハンド弓のこと動力を用いる工作機械としての金切りのこ盤がある。後者は単にのこ盤あるいはのこぎり盤と称されることも多く，のこ刃の切削運動から，弓のこ刃の直線往復運動によって切断を行う弓のこ盤，環状の帯のこ刃の回転･直線運動によって切断を行う帯のこ盤および丸のこ刃の回転運動によって切断を行う丸のこ盤に大別される。いずれも原理的には木材用の木工のこ盤と同じであるが，弓のこ盤の場合，押し行程で切削を行う点が木工のものと異なる。
