A city in the southern part of East Sussex County, southeast of England, United Kingdom. It is part of the Eastbourne district. It is a seaside resort town facing the English Channel, about 90 km south-southeast of London, at the eastern foot of the chalky South Downs. The original settlement was located a little inland from the coast and was called Old Town, where medieval cathedrals and other remains remain. The town as it is today was built in the early 19th century as one of the first planned cities in England. It was later connected to London by rail and developed rapidly, becoming a high-end resort town as well as a residential area and a venue for various conferences. Area: 46 ^km2 . Population: 106,562 (2001).

イギリス，イングランド南東部，イーストサセックス県南部の都市。イーストボーン地区を構成する。ロンドンの南南東約 90km，イギリス海峡に臨む海浜保養都市で，白亜のサウスダウンズ丘陵の東端麓に位置する。初期の集落は海岸からやや内陸に入ったところにあり，オールドタウンと呼ばれ，中世の聖堂などが残る。今日の町は 19世紀初めにイギリス最初の計画都市の一つとして建設されたものである。その後ロンドンと鉄道で結ばれて急速に発展，高級保養地となっているほか，住宅地，各種会議開催地としても知られる。面積 46km²。人口 10万6562（2001）。
