An insect of the Orthoptera order, family Ploceidae (illustration). A type of small cricket that lives on shrubs. The male makes a chirping sound like a bell being struck, hence the name, and is well-known as one of the insects that sing in autumn. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and mainland China west of the Kanto region. Its body length is 9-12 mm. Adults are commonly seen on shrubs, garden trees, and hedges in the mountains and fields from late summer to autumn. The body is flat, and the male's cephalothorax is brown and the abdomen is blackish brown, but the whole body is covered with gray-brown scales except for the pronotum and wings.

直翅目カネタタキ科の昆虫（イラスト）。低木上にすむ小型のコオロギの1種。雄はチンチンチンと鉦をたたくように鳴くので，この名があり，秋の鳴く虫の一つとして親しまれている。関東以西の本州，四国，九州や中国大陸に分布する。体長は9～12mm。成虫は夏の終りから秋にかけ，山野の低木や庭木，生垣上にふつうに見られる。体は扁平で，雄の頭胸部は茶褐色，腹部は黒褐色をしているが，前胸背板や翅を除き，全身灰褐色の鱗片で覆われている。
