A musical instrument or dance prop. It is written in various ways, such as 捊, 棙, and 枹. A typical example is a percussion instrument, and is also used as a translation of Western musical instruments such as beater, stick, and mallet. As a Japanese percussion instrument, it refers to a striking stick such as a drum or a bell, but it does not necessarily mean only rod-shaped ones, but also something with a head wrapped in something like a tampon for Western musical instruments, in which case it is called a bai and sometimes written with the character 棓. In addition, a stick that is struck with the end is called a shuumoku (strike stick), and these range from thick log-shaped ones used to strike temple bells to T-shaped ones used to strike gongs, but the latter, such as a tsuno shuumoku (horn shuumoku) with a spherical head, is also called a tsuno shuumoku (corner mallet), and there is not necessarily a strict distinction between shuumoku and shuumoku.
