A lower-ranking religious performer in the guise of a monk who strikes a gong, recites sutras, and performs door-to-door activities to ask for charity. In the early modern period, there was a performance called "Hatchogane" or "Yatsukarakane," in which young men would strike eight gongs arranged in a circle, but later, they would wear eight gongs around their necks and perform a curved strike, while their monk companions would ask for charity. Other door-to-door performers who struck gongs around their necks included the monk who performed a singing nembutsu and the pilgrim who performed an impromptu kayanokanjo (flowing kanjo) ceremony with a bucket of water on his head.
