Body temperature is measured in the armpit, mouth, and rectum, but in Japan it is customary to measure by placing a thermometer in the armpit. It takes more than 15 minutes for the temperature of the temporary cavity that forms in the armpit to stabilize. Body temperature fluctuates regularly over the course of a day, but an adult's armpit temperature measured between 1 pm and 4 pm is 36.89 ± 0.34°C. In other countries, it is common to measure oral temperature by placing a thermometer under the tongue, and oral temperature is about 0.4°C higher than axillary temperature, and rectal temperature is 0.8°C higher.
