Canabun - Kanabun

It is an insect belonging to the subfamily Cetoniinae of the family Scarabaeidae of the order Coleoptera of the class Insecta. It is found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China, and inhabits mixed forests from the plains to the low mountains, gathering on the sap of trees such as oak trees. Its body length is about 25 mm, rectangular and narrowing at the front, and its body surface is copper brown to copper green with an oily sheen. It flies well, extending its hindwings from under the upperwings. The green canabun R. unicolor of the same genus is slightly slender and shines a beautiful grass green color, and is found in mountainous areas, while the black canabun R. polita is pure black and shiny. Both species gather on sap like the canabun. There are many species in Taiwan and southern regions. Note that scarab beetles that fly to lights at night, such as the chafer beetle and cherry beetle, which belong to the subfamily Scarabaeinae, are also commonly called canabuns.

昆虫綱甲虫目コガネムシ科ハナムグリ亜科に属する昆虫。本州、四国、九州、対馬(つしま)のほか朝鮮半島、中国に分布し、平地から低山地の雑木林におり、クヌギなどの樹液に集まる。体長25ミリメートル前後、長方形で前方は狭まり、体表は銅褐色ないし銅緑色で油状の光沢をもつ。上ばねの下から後ろばねを出し、よく飛ぶ。同属のアオカナブンR. unicolorはすこし細形で美しい草緑色に光り、山地に多く、クロカナブンR. politaは真黒色で光沢があり、両種ともカナブン同様に樹液に集まる。台湾や南方域には多くの種がいる。なお、スジコガネ亜科に属するドウガネブイブイ、サクラコガネなど、夜間灯火に飛んでくるコガネムシ類のことを俗にカナブンとよぶこともある。
