…The 19th century Western idea of “absolute music” certainly sought freedom from social functions and emphasized the autonomy and completeness of musical works, but the basis for the establishment of this idea was extremely fragile, as discussed in the chapter “What is music?”. In his book “Musical Thinking” (1977), musicologist H.E.Gegebrecht (1919- ) proposed a division into “autonomous music” and “functional music,” classifying art music centered on the work as seen in “absolute music” as “autonomous music,” and secular music, dance music, work songs, entertainment music, and popular music as “functional music.” As detailed in Eggebrecht’s essay, the idea of “autonomous music” that does not have a clear function is very limited in terms of time and region, and considering the state of music of the world’s ethnic groups, it can be said that “functional music” is rather more common. … *Some of the terminology references "Eggebrecht, HH" are listed below.
