Ernest Maltravers

[Relationship with Japanese literature]
The Japanese, who had access to new knowledge from the West during the Meiji Restoration, were quick to import and translate the "political novels" of contemporary 19th-century British writers, such as Bulwer-Lytton and Disraeli. The original work for "Hanayagi Shunwa," translated by Niwa (Oda) Junichiro and published as early as 1878, was Lytton's "Ernest Maltravers" (1837). Japanese readers at the time expected novels to have practical utility, providing guidance and answers to political and real-life problems.

From Bulwer-Lytton

…His many works are diverse, ranging from high society novels, political novels, crime novels, horror novels, and future novels. Although they lack depth and artistic quality, they skillfully capture the tastes and trends of the time and are widely accepted by readers. His famous works include Pelham (1828), a tale of the romantic and political adventures of a high society young man, Ernest Maltravers (1837), Paul Clifford (1830), which treats crime as a social problem and portrays criminals sympathetically, and Eugene Allam (1832), a historical novel from the Roman period, The Last Days of Pompeii (1834). Many of his works, including Ernest Maltravers (translated by Junichiro Niwa as Hanayagi Shunwa, 1878), were translated into Japanese in the 1870s, making him a pioneer in the history of translating Western novels, along with D. Defoe and J. Verne. …
