A town in northeastern Laos. It is located in a mountainous area about 320 km north-northeast of the capital Vientiane, near the border with Vietnam. It is a distribution center for benzoin (a type of natural resin) and lacquer. It has sulfur hot springs. During the Laotian civil war, it was the base of the Pathet Lao. It is about 200 km west-southwest of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and is connected to the city by road via Moc Chau and Hoa Binh.
