A Kyoto ware potter from the late Edo period to the Meiji period. He was the eldest son of the 11th Hozen, and his childhood name was Sentaro. In 1843 (Tenpo 14), he took the name of the 12th Nishimura Zengoro. He learned pottery techniques from Hozen, and in 1852 (Kaei 5), he moved the kiln at Aburanokoji Ichijoshita to the site of Nonomura Ninsei's Omuro kiln and revived it, using the "Omuro" seal. In 1865 (Keio 1), he was invited to the Yamashiro kiln in Enuma County, Daishoji Domain, Kaga Province (Ishikawa Prefecture), where he stayed for six years, devoting himself to the development of revived Kutani ware, and from this time on he used the pen name Wazen. In 1871 (Meiji 4), he handed over the family headship to his eldest son Tokuzen, took the name Zenichiro, and officially adopted the Nishimura real surname Eiraku. From 1873 (Meiji 6), he was invited to Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, for four years, where he also produced Western tableware such as coffee cups. In his later years, he opened the Kikukei kiln in Shimogawara, Kyoto. His style included brocade, gosu akae, blue and white, Wanli, Annam, and Egoryeo, and he showed great talent in copying.
