GIF - GIF

A format for saving graphic data. An image format developed by CompuServe, a major US PC communications network. It can handle up to 256 shades of gray for monochrome and 256 colors for color. It can also be used to make certain colors transparent on web pages (transparent GIF) and to express simple animations (GIF animation), and is often used on the Internet alongside JPEG. グラフィックデータの保存形式のひとつ。米国の大手パソコン通信ネットワーク、CompuServeで開発された画像フォーマット。モノクロは256階調、カラーは256色まで扱える。Webページ上で、特定の色を透過させたり（透過GIF）、簡単なアニメーションを表現（GIFアニメーション）できることもあり、インターネットではJPEGと並んでよく使われる。ファイルの拡張子は「.gif」。
