A format for saving graphic data. An image format developed by CompuServe, a major US PC communications network. It can handle up to 256 shades of gray for monochrome and 256 colors for color. It can also be used to make certain colors transparent on web pages (transparent GIF) and to express simple animations (GIF animation), and is often used on the Internet alongside JPEG.
