An old town in the eastern part of the Tsugaru Peninsula, Higashitsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. It faces Mutsu Bay, with its central settlement of Kanita at the mouth of the Kanita River. It developed as a post station on the Matsumae Highway, and the Tsugaru Line runs through it. In addition to rice farming, the town also produces scallops, salmon, and trout. In March 2005, it merged with Hiradate Village and Minmaya Village in Higashitsugaru District to become Sotogahama Town. Area 116.39 km2 . Population 4,137 (2003). 青森県東津軽郡,津軽半島東部の旧町。陸奥(むつ)湾に面し,蟹田川の河口に中心集落蟹田がある。松前街道の宿駅として発達,津軽線が通じる。稲作を主体とした農業を行うほか,ホタテ,サケ,マスを産する。2005年3月東津軽郡平舘村,三厩村と合併し町制,外ヶ浜町となる。116.39km2。4137人(2003)。
