"Open Boat"

...He expanded his reporting to the West and Mexico, but in January 1897, while on a trip to cover the Cuban War of Independence, his ship was wrecked and he was left adrift at sea in the harsh winter. Based on this experience, he wrote the excellent short story "The Open Boat" (1897). However, his iconoclastic attitude, which was evident in his private life and works, drew harsh ridicule from the American literary world, and he moved to England.
