Crab Nebula

Japanese: かに星雲(蟹星雲) - かにせいうん（英語表記）Crab Nebula

This nebula is located at the tip of the bull's horn in Taurus, and is the remains of a supernova. It was given the number 1 (M1) in the catalog of diffuse objects created by Messier in 1764, and in the NGC it was given the number 1 in 1952. Records from China and Japan show that in 1054 it shone brighter than Venus. It is 7000 light years away, and gas is scattering in all directions at a high speed of over 1000 km per second. Therefore, when comparing a photo taken in 1921 using the 1.5 m telescope on Mount Wilson with one taken 12 years earlier, it was discovered to have expanded by about 1 arc second.

おうし座の牡牛の角の先にある星雲で，超新星の残骸である。1764年にメシエが作った拡散状天体のカタログで1番(M1)の番号が与えられ，NGCでは1952。1054年に金星より明るく輝いたことが，中国や日本の記録に見られる。7000光年のかなたにあって，毎秒1000km以上の高速でガスが四方八方に飛び散っている。そのため，1921年にウィルソン山の1.5m望遠鏡を使って撮った写真と12年前のものとを比べると，角度の1秒あまり膨張しているのが発見された。
