Crab plover (Crab plover)

Japanese: カニチドリ(蟹千鳥) - カニチドリ（英語表記）crab plover

A bird of the Charadriiformes order, family Ploveridae (illustration). This family consists of only one species. It is found only around the Indian Ocean, such as Madagascar, the Comoros Islands, the Red Sea coast, the Persian Gulf coast, the coast of India, Sri Lanka, the Andaman Islands, and the Nicobar Islands, and lives on coasts, tidal flats, and coral reefs. Total length is about 37.5 cm. Its black beak is rather long, straight, and strong. Its legs are long. Its wings are also long and pointed. Its back, shoulder feathers, and flight feathers are black, and the rest of its body is white. It has incomplete webbed feet between its three front toes, similar to those of the black-winged stilt, but unlike the black-winged stilt, it has long hind toes.

チドリ目カニチドリ科の鳥（イラスト）。この科はこの1種だけからなる。マダガスカル，コモロ諸島，紅海沿岸，ペルシア湾沿岸，インド沿岸，スリランカ，アンダマン諸島，ニコバル諸島など，インド洋周辺にだけ分布し，海岸，干潟，サンゴ礁などにすむ。全長約37.5cm。黒いくちばしはやや長くまっすぐで，がんじょうである。脚は長い。翼も長くて先がとがっている。背，肩羽，風切りは黒く，その他の部分は白い。前方の3本のあしゆびの間にはセイタカシギのものに似た不完全な水かきがあるが，セイタカシギと違って長い後ゆびをもっている。
