Anatase (English spelling)

Anatase (English spelling)

An oxide mineral. It often occurs as elongated square pyramidal crystals with sharp angles. It is polymorphous with rutile and brookite. Compared to other similar pyramidal minerals, this mineral forms much elongated crystals, so its English name comes from the Greek word for elongation. It occurs in veins (so-called alpine veins) that cut through granitic pegmatites and metamorphic rocks, accompanied by quartz, muscovite, tourmaline, etc., and has a clear crystal shape. It also occurs in small amounts in various igneous and metamorphic rocks.
