The place where the person in charge of directing the business of a merchant is located. If there is a person with a certain degree of independent command, it becomes an office, and one is necessary. Therefore, if there are several offices, each office is either an office that controls the whole (head office) or an office that is controlled (branch office). In a company, both the head office and branches are registered (Commercial Code). The office is the standard place of commercial registration and judicial jurisdiction (Civil Procedure Code), and the place where debts are performed.

商人の営業に関して指揮をする責任者の所在する場所。ある程度の独立した指揮権をもつ者が存在すれば営業所となり，またそれを必要とする。したがって数個の営業所がある場合は，それぞれの営業所は全体を統制する営業所 (本店) と，統制される営業所 (支店) のいずれかである。会社では本店・支店ともに登記される (商法) 。営業所は商業登記，裁判管轄の標準地 (民事訴訟法) であり，債務履行の場所となる。
