〘noun〙① The outermost garment when wearing multiple layers of clothing. ※Sanki Kikashu (c. 1128) Winter "The snow that has fallen on the bed of my Shiba hut is my temporary uhage."② In court attire since the Middle Ages, this uchiki is worn on top of the kasane uchiki. Usually worn over the ittsuginu and under the karaginu or kouchiki . Uwagasane . ⇔shitagi . ※Motoori Moto Utsubo (c. 970-999), Naishi no Takumi "If you say ohon uhage, it's even more."③ In court attire, something that covers the waist from above, as opposed to hakama. Mo. ※Eiga (c. 1028-92), Neai: "The hakama (trousers) are also made of the same maple leaves, and the uhagi (trousers) are also white." ④ In early modern and later clothing, a kosode (short sleeve) worn on top of other clothing. ⇔ Undergarments. ※Toraakirahon Kyogen, Yakusui (late Muromachi period - early early modern period): "Uhagi doesn't suit me, I'll take it." ⑤ In Western clothing since the Meiji period, the outer garment worn on the upper body over trousers. ※Bouya Monogatari (1875), translated by Nagamine Hideki, the story of King Kuroshima: "When he was about to carry out his plan, he took off his uhagi (trousers) and dressed in light clothing ."
