A plain in southern Italy, surrounding the city of Capua, from which the name Campania originated. Since ancient times it has been called "fertile Campania," as both the land and the climate are well suited to growing crops. It is one of Italy's leading vegetable and fruit producing regions, producing tomatoes and potatoes, which account for one-third of the national production. It stretches from the Sannio region to the coasts of the Gulf of Gaeta and the Gulf of Naples, and is made up of fertile volcanic soil. The Volturno River (185km) flows through the center of the region. [Mochizuki Kazushi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
