A museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Founded in 1846 and opened to the public in 1875. Collections were started by Field Marshal Ahmad Pasa, and the museum mainly displays artifacts excavated within the former Ottoman Empire. It houses relics from the Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, Assyrian, Egyptian, Urartian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods, as well as 45,000 books. There are also many historical documents such as clay tablet documents from the Sumerian period, and inscriptions and inscriptions from the Byzantine period.
