It means a valley or marshland. It is a word that is used frequently in Musashi and Sagami. Similar words include yatsu (valley, yatsu) in Kamakura and Shimousa, and yachi (valley), which is used very frequently in the Tohoku region and Hokkaido. Both are said to be of Ainu origin. The Hitachi no Kuni Fudoki contains a story about a snake-like god called Yato who ruled over a yato and obstructed development. Since ancient times, such wet and marshy land has been considered suitable for rice paddies and has been a good target for development. Yato can use spring water as irrigation water and small-scale cultivation is possible, so especially in the Middle Ages, cultivation of valleys like yato was actively carried out, creating the typical cultivated land landscape of the Middle Ages.
