Overglaze painting

Japanese:
Overglaze painting

A technical term for ceramics, it refers to the process of painting colored paints onto the glaze surface to create overglazed porcelain (also called akae, nishikide, or gosai). The name "overglaze" comes from the fact that the colored paints, which are a type of lead glaze, are applied with a paintbrush onto a base that has been coated with a transparent glaze. Various brushes are used for overglaze painting, but they can be broadly divided into thin brushes for drawing lines and thick brushes for filling in the colored surface. This overglaze painting began in China during the Jin dynasty, when overglaze painting first began, but the details of modern Chinese overglaze painting techniques are completely different from Japanese techniques.
