Tsushima Island is an island in the Sea of Japan, 125 km northwest of central Fukuoka, Kyushu, in the Tsushima Strait. It is part of Tsushima City, Nagasaki Prefecture. It is a border island located 49.5 km away from Korea in a straight line, and with an area of approximately 696.48 square kilometers, it is one of the largest in Japan. It has been an important island since ancient times as a transit point between the Korean Peninsula, and has many valuable historical and folklore materials, such as artifacts from Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula that have been excavated from ruins on the island. 九州、福岡の中心部から北西125キロメートルの日本海、対馬海峡に浮かぶ島。長崎県対馬市に属する。韓国まで直線距離で49.5キロメートルに位置する国境の島で、面積は約696.48平方キロメートルと国内有数の大きさ。朝鮮半島との中継点として古くから重要な島で、島内の遺跡からは九州と朝鮮半島の遺物が出土するなど、歴史・民俗学的に貴重な資料を多く有するほか、国指定天然記念物のツシマヤマネコなど、希少な動植物が多数生息する。
