〘名〙① 地塗りの絵の具や下染めの上に、さらに絵の具でかいて仕上げた絵や模様。※応仁記（１５Ｃ後）二「或時上えの短冊を硯箱(すずりばこ)の蓋(ふた)に入れて置けるを見れば」② 布の白く染めぬいた所に、絵の具で紋や模様を描くこと。また、そのもの。※俳諧・六百番誹諧発句合（1677）八一番「梅鉢や袖にまたれし上絵書〈泰徳〉」③ 陶磁器の釉上にほどこす絵や模様。下絵付けで一度釉(うわぐすり)をかけて焼いた器物に、さらに種々の彩釉で描いたもの。
