1762-1845 (12th year of the Horeki era - 2nd year of the Koka era) A haiku poet of the late Edo period. His family name was Tagawa, given name was Togen, and also Yoshinaga. His other names were Taitake, Uguisutake, Bashoro, etc. He was from Kumamoto. He learned haiku from his father Teizan and Hisatake Kiseki at an early age, and took the name Kyoryo. When he moved to Edo, he followed Michihiko and changed his name to Hourou. He is one of the three great poets of the Tenpo period, along with Sokyu and Umemura. He was an ambitious man with great leadership skills, and had many feudal lords and nobles as his disciples. In his later years, he was given the title of "Hana no Hono" by the Nijō family. He wrote "Basho Habune" and advocated haiku that aimed to emulate Basho's character. His works are somewhat lacking in poetic emotion, and are vulgar, falling into reasoning and petty subjectivity, but this is in keeping with the spirit of Edo tastes and was welcomed by the masses.
